Try a different getItemValue method, perhaps?

Have you tried using the getItemValue method specific to the datatype you're obtaining?
ie:
getItemValueString
getItemValueDouble
getItemValueInteger
getItemValueDateTimeArray

Alternatively, you can roll your own:
getItemValueCustomData
getItemValueCustomDataBytes
